Spaceborne SAR Antennas for Earth Science
Before the development of the first synthetic aperture radar (SAR) antenna flown in space, Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) was involved in an aircraft radar program to image the Earth surface for various science applications. This radar was flown on a Convair CV-990 aircraft with the antenna attached to one of the baggage doors of the airplane. The antenna was a planar array with eight radiatin...
متن کاملSerendipity in the Use of Satellite Scatterometer, SAR, and Other Sensor Data
hen marine geophysical measurements reach resolutions of ten to hundreds of meters over 1000-km regions, a new realm of analysis is opened. Such data did not exist prior to Seasat in 1978. However, the value of these data has been neglected for almost two decades. The reasons are many: Star Wars, modeler indifference, fear of a new form of data where empiricism reigns, and numerical model mysti...
متن کاملDirect surface current field imaging from space by along-track InSAR and conventional SAR
Since the SEASAT mission in 1978, spaceborne synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images of ocean scenes have been used successfully for a variety of applications. However, despite the fact that a SAR is a Doppler radar, conventional SAR images do not provide direct information on target velocities, since all Doppler information is normally utilised to obtain the best possible spatial resolution unde...

The GAMMA Modular SAR Processor (MSP), Interferometric SAR Processor (ISP), Differential Interferometry and Geocoding Software (DIFF&GEO), and Land Application Tools (LAT) are modular software packages useful to process synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images. Data of both spaceborne and airborne sensors including ERS-1/2, JERS-1, SIRC, SEASAT, RADARSAT StripMap mode, and the single-pass Dornier ...
متن کاملWaveform aliasing in satellite radar altimetry Walter H. F. Smith and Remko Scharroo, NOAA Lab for Satellite Altimetry Beginning with Seasat and continuing through the design for Jason-CS, all satellite radar
Beginning with Seasat and continuing through the design for Jason-CS, all satellite radar altimeters have employed a pulse compression scheme known as full-deramp of a linear FM chirp. The process by which all conventional altimeters create a waveform from digitized radar echoes can lead to aliasing of the waveform. This was first noted by Bob Jensen in a 1999 paper (IEEE TGRS 37(2):651-658, do...
